Understanding Cribbing and Its Role in Modular Construction

What is cribbing and why does the modular industry use it a crib is a support often sitting 35 to 40 in high that is used to hold modules off of the ground cribbing can be built out of many different materials such as wood metal or composite materials with each having their own pros and cons once a module is put into storage ideally you don’t have to use heavy equipment like a crane or forklifts to load it again onto a trailer autonomous mod trailers allow you to crib up the module at a in which the trailer can back underneath and self-load and offload with cribbing here’s how it works once you’re ready to move a module simply back the trailer underneath the mod that’s sitting on cribbing load it up and you’re on your way Pro tips when placing a mod on cribbing you want the rim joist or the exterior joist of the mod to be centered on the cribbing you’ll want to make sure you have enough cribbing on both sides of the mod to support the weight and make sure there aren’t any large spans between the individual cribs if the spans are too big you’ll end up with something called deflection deflection is when the material spanning that distance starts To bend lastly make sure the ground is compacted and level enough to support the weight of the modern crib that way it doesn’t sink causing the module to fall off the cribbing
